This blog is in series of my travel blogs comprising of different cities across India where I have been to. South India is an important part of our culture and boasts of various places that are worth visiting at least once, from pilgrimage, temples, hill stations and beaches it has all ..
So my journey to the South started with Chennai.
Day 1:Delhi-Chennai .Landed on a hot muggy afternoon in the capital of Tamil Nadu. At first it looks like any other city but once you start exploring it , you realize it is unique in itself. Apart from the delicious South Indian food, it has beautiful temples and Marina Beach ; a natural urban beach in the city. Visited few temples including the ‘Parthasarthy Temple’ it is dedicated to Lord Krishna and is one of the oldest structures in the city.

Day 2: Took a train from Chennai to Coimbatore and from there cab to ‘Ooty’.Ooty is also known as Udhagamandalam . A hill station in the state of Tamil Nadu, it is hugely surrounded by natural beauty and has various tourist spots.
P.S.: Went there during 2nd week of June and it was damn cold. Especially at the Doddabetta peak. Take light woolens whenever you plan a visit.
The tourist spots that are a must visit when in Chennai :
- Nilgiri Mountain Railway
- Ooty Lake
- Botanical Garden
- Doddabetta peak
- Tea Garden
- Chocolate factory
- Murugan Temple
Rose GardenRoad leading to tea estate
Day 3: Coonoor: On the way to Ooty, you will come across huge tea estates and lovely homes all the way, making you jealous of the people who stay there living the best life any one can imagine. This place is Coonoor, just like Ooty, Coonoor too has many tea gardens and botanical garden.
Day 4: Booked a cab from Chennai to Mahabalipuram. The Group of monuments at Mahabalipuram is a collection of 7th and 8th century religious monuments in the coastal beach resort town of Mamallapuram and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay Of Bengal. (Source :Wiki).
Places that I visited :
- Shore Temple
- Pancha Rathas ( 5-chariots) and tiger caves
From Mahabalipuram took a cab and went to Pondicherry.
Day 5: Pondicherry- Was here for only a day but was mesmerized by the serenity and beauty of this place could not make it to Auroville , hope to visit that place too..coming to this French culture restored location, Pondicherry is the most calmest town you will ever come across. I went to the Aurobindo Ashram and Vinayagar Temple. The French culture is restored in the French quarter by tree-lined streets, chic boutiques and cafes and mustard colored French villas. It was our last day there , but a part of me wanted to stay back here in Pondicherry forever..till we met next time I bid this place..au revoir!(Bye-English)
The second leg of the South trip: Trivandrum-Munnar-Kanyakumari-Kochi
Day 1: Trivandrum: Capital city of the state Kerala is known for it’s famous Kovalam beach and Padmanabhaswamy Temple. This temple has a unique infusion of both Kerala and Dravidian style of architecture and is a must when you are in the city. When I visited this temple it was mid-June and there was a huge gathering of priests who had gathered there to perform puja to impress the rain-god as presumably monsoons got delayed during that year!
P.S.: Wearing Jeans is not allowed inside the temple and you will be given a cloth to drape around called (Dhoti) from outside the temple.
Day 2: Munnar: Is a hill station located in Kerala. It is like Ooty famous for tea gardens and botanical garden. But Munnar has it’s own old world charm. The walk down old Munnar made me realize the same. It’s a quaint little hill station but it’s beauty will enchant you completely. If in Munnar, also check out Mettupetty Dam, it is quite close to the town and a crowd gatherer.
Day 3: Kanyakumari-is also known as Cape Comorin and surrounded by water all around. It is very famous for it’s sunrise and sunset points. Places to visit :
- Vivekananda Rock Memorial
- Padmanabhapuram Palace
- Thiruvalluvar Statue
From Kanyakumari went to Kochi last day of the trip.
Day 4: Kochi: Only half a day spent. Went on ferry ride, unluckily it was Sunday and the market was closed therefore could only make it to the ferry.
Came back to Delhi from Kochi with a bag full of memories and souvenirs. It was a beautiful trip:)
